Lower Mandatory Drug Sentences to Increase Budget for Education
This is a persuasive policy essay where I was instructed to "write a persuasive argument that first educates your reader on the importance and scope of a social problem, and then advocates for a detailed solution to the problem." I chose to focus my policy on prison reform because I feel that the high incarceration rates and re-incarceration rates are a huge issue in America and will only continue to grow, unless action is taken.
I focused on the benefits of putting more money and energy toward education, both before and during incarceration. In order to be able to put more money towards education, the mandatory drug sentences need to be lowered. If all of the above is done correctly, there will be a domino effect of positive changes. If the mandatory drug sentence is lowered, then more money will be able to be put towards education, which will lower incarceration rates and lower the overall growing prison population.

Being a "kid"
I wrote this essay for a paradigm shift assignment where we were to "identify, discuss, and analyze a “paradigm shift” you recognize in a recent or contemporary cultural moment." I chose to focus on the shift of how young girls are now focusing extreme amounts of their time and effort to conform to society's stereotypical image of what a woman "should be" compared to just a few years ago when I was in Junior High. These girls are influenced by beauty pageants, parents and the pressures of society and media in general, whereas my peers and I were outside the realm of such influence at that young of an age. I ran around outside playing in mud and young girls today would rather sit in front of the mirror and put on makeup.
This topic really interested me and I think my passion for the subject reflects through my words in the essay. I am a strong proponent of being your own person and being a person who is beautiful instead of focusing all efforts on external beauty. With social media being so cemented in our every day lives, I can see how in such a short period of time the focus of beauty can shift to those who are still trying to define beauty themselves.
